Demar Williams, an Edith Allen Scholarship and UM Allocation Award recipient, is determined to make an impact in both his community and the field of pharmacy. A United Methodist student at Bethune-Cookman University, Williams is pursuing a Biochemistry degree with plans to become a pharmacist.
A 2023 internship sparked Williams’ interest when he worked alongside a research pharmacist and discovered the dynamic nature of the field. “I learned about the different paths in pharmacy, and it motivated me to contribute to the profession,” he says.
A member of his local church, Williams is actively involved in outreach programs that provide food for those in need and support local schools in their educational efforts. He sees these community service activities as integral to his future career and personal growth. “Going to college allows me to gain knowledge I can share with others, especially those who may not have the same opportunities,” he says.
The scholarships he received have helped alleviate financial pressures, allowing Williams to focus more on his studies. “Without this support, my career goals would not be achievable,” he says.
Williams is also grateful for the environment at Bethune-Cookman, a United Methodist-supported Black College Fund school, where he can connect with others who share his cultural background. “This has helped me appreciate and embrace my identity while fostering an environment where I can be authentic. This has allowed me to concentrate more on my academics and achieve my best work.”
With his sights set on pharmacy school and a future dedicated to service, Williams is committed to being a positive serving in his community, guided by his faith and the support of the United Methodist Church.
