The United Methodist Church seeks to reach and minister to persons of all races and cultural backgrounds, it's not uncommon for clergypersons to be appointed to congregations in which the majority of members (or potential membership) are of a different race, ethnicity or culture from the pastor. The General Commission on Religion and Race has developed new resources to help pastors adjust to their new appointment as they embark on cross-racial/cross-cultural ministry.
The resources consist of pieces written by by pastors with experience in cross-racial/cross-cultural ministry. These will help leaders develop cultural competence as they get to know their new charge and become more self-aware of their own expectations, assumptions and concerns.
