When some folks retire, they search out a good recliner, a pair of comfy slippers and a remote control. But as Reed Galin reports, a group of Korean immigrants in Georgia is tackling retirement by attending school and learning more about their adopted country.
어떤 이들은 은퇴 후 편안한 슬리퍼를 신고 TV 리모컨을 들고 푹신한 안락의자에 누워 시간을 보낸다. 반면, 리드 갈린의 보고에 따르면, 조지아주의 한인 이민자들 중에는 학교를 다니거나, 새로운 환경에 잘 적응할 수 있는 방법을 배우면서 은퇴 후의 삶을 열심히 살고 있는 이들도 있다.

They don't jump and jostle their way onto the school bus. The driver never has to scold these students back into their seats - because, by the time you're 60 years past middle school, it's not the bus ride - it's the actual classes that are the fun part.
학교버스를 타기 위해 그들은 뛰거나 서로 밀치거나 하지 않는다. 버스 운전사도 이런 학생들에게 제자리로 가서 앉으라고 소리치지 않아도 된다. 중학교를 졸업한 지 거의 60년 이상이 지난 그들에게 있어 학교 버스를 타는 것은 실제 수업에서 얻는 즐거움이라고 말할 수 있다.

At the
United Methodist Korean Church of Atlanta, Yoohie Sohn (YOU-EE SAN) helped organize a school for
immigrant seniors. He teaches the English class.
아틀란타한인교회의 손유의 장로는 노인대학을
세우는 일을 도왔고, 그곳에서 영어를 가르치고 있다.
"My
favorite sport is baseball."
"내가 좋아하는 스포츠는
야구입니다."
And a
little American culture along the way.
미국 문화에 대해서도 배운다.

Sohn was a
successful engineer, now retired.
손 장로는 성공적인 엔지니어로 일하다 은퇴를
했다.

Sohn/United Methodist Shalom School: "I make the curriculum myself. Think of average age of 70
or better. How could any existing commercial program off the shelf satisfy that kind of
student's needs?"
손 장로: "커리큘럼은 제가 직접 만듭니다.
학생들의 평균 연령이 70 이상으로, 이들의 필요를 만족시킬 수 있는 커리큘럼이 시중에서 판매되고 있는 상업적인 프로그램에서 찾을 수가 있을까요?"

Shin (NOM-HOOM SHIN) is familiar with the expression "you can't teach an old dog new tricks."
학생 중의 한 명인 신남현씨는 "늙은 개에게
새로운 재주를 가르치기 어렵다"는 표현을 자주 들어왔다.
(Interpreter's voice): "If
the old dog has a mind to learn, she still can. Without school, I would stay home depressed and
isolated."
(통역자): "만약 그 늙은 개가 배우고자 하는
마음만 있다면 아직도 가능합니다. 노인대학이 없었다면, 저는 집 안에서 홀로 우울증에 걸려 있었을 겁니다."
The day
includes "recess" - senior style. Physical education is a critical part of this school. And,
there is computer instruction.
노인들에게 맞추어 "쉬는 시간"도 있다. 체육
수업은 노인대학에서 아주 중요하다. 컴퓨터 교실도 있다.

Sohn/United Methodist Shalom School: "These people, they need somebody to come to them and bring
what&s left in their lives out so they can enjoy more."
손 장로: "이들에게는 누군가 다가와 아직도
그들에게 남아 있는 것들을 발견하여 즐거운 여생을 보낼 수 있도록 도와야 합니다."

Mr. Sohn began by laying out the course work meticulously. But, a 91-year-old woman urged him to speed it up. He realized his students didn't have any time to waste waiting for him. He says there comes a point where, like the shoe company says, you just "do it."
손 장로는 이 일을 조금씩 진행시키려 했지만, 91세의 한 여성이 신속한 진행을 그에게 요구했다. 학생들은 그를 기다리면서 낭비할 시간이 많이 남아있지 않다는 것을 그는 깨달았다. 한 신발회사에서 말하는 것처럼, 그냥 "해야 할" 때가 온 것이라고 그는 말한다.
