IN RE: Motion by Kentucky Annual Conference Requesting a Declaratory Decision on Whether Their Conference Can Utilize ¶2549 or Some Other Provision of the Discipline as a Pathway for the Exit of Local Churches from The United Methodist Church

The Kentucky Annual Conference requested a declaratory decision on whether their Conference can utilize ¶2549 of The Book of Discipline, 2016, [hereinafter Discipline] or some other provision of the Discipline as a pathway for the exit of local churches from The United Methodist Church.

The Judicial Council lacks jurisdiction under ¶2610 to determine whether a given paragraph of the Discipline can be utilized in a certain way or to determine which Discipline paragraph might be used to accomplish a specific goal.

The Judicial Council addresses the meaning, application, and effect of ¶2549 in Decision 1512.

Bill Waddell recused and did not participate in any of the proceedings related to this decision.
