Agencies
The general agencies of the United Methodist Church support the denomination’s mission by providing resources, leadership development and administrative services to local churches, annual conferences and global ministries. Each agency focuses on specific areas such as discipleship, communications, finance, social justice, education, etc.
Through fulfilling research requests from various parties, to speaking engagements, to webinars, online courses, podcasts, and so much more, we ensure that those in the pews, the seminaries, the pulpits, and beyond know what it means to be United Methodist.
Working from its headquarters in the only non-governmental building on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., USA, the General Board of Church and Society uses Scripture, The Social Principles and The Book of Resolutions as its core documents.
The General Council on Finance and Administration ministry includes protecting the legal interests of the denomination, collecting and analyzing statistics, serving as the trustees of the financial assets given to the denomination and maintaining an insurance program available to all United Methodist congregations in the United States where acceptable on an underwriting basis.
Agency Alignment for Shared Ministry
Four general agencies of The United Methodist Church — Discipleship Ministries, Global Ministries (GBGM), Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), and United Methodist Communications (UMCom) — have announced a vision to combine their ministry and begin working to form a single agency that brings together these ministries. During the 2026 spring board meetings of these agencies, board members unanimously voted to support the unification concept and to continue developing the proposal further.
