Paragraph 4, Article IV of The United Methodist Church's Constitution was amended to include "gender" and "ability" during the Postponed 2020 General Conference. This amendment now requires ratification by all annual conferences worldwide, needing a 2/3 majority vote for approval.

Say YES to Inclusion! Annual conferences must ratify a historic vote to add 'gender' and 'ability' to The UMC Constitution’s membership protections. Learn why this matters and how you can help.

“Called by Name,” at left, is by contemporary American artist Laura James. At right is “Mary Magdalene Proclaims Resurrection!” also by James. A commission to paint images of Mary Magdalene from Scripture led James to rethink her assumptions about the witness to Christ’s resurrection. United Methodists say Mary Magdalene’s role as apostle offers lessons for today when women’s roles remains highly contested. Images courtesy of Laura James. Used with permission.

She’s long had the reputation as the Gospels’ bad girl, but the biblical account of Mary Magdalene is very different. United Methodists think her role as apostle offers lessons for today.

The General Commission on the Status and Role of Women advocates for full participation of women in the total life of The United Methodist Church. We’re helping the church recognize every person – clergy and lay, women and men, adults and children - as full and equal parts of God’s human family. We believe that a fully engaged and empowered membership is vital to The United Methodist Church’s mission "to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."

We provide resources for how to respond to and prevent sexual misconduct in The United Methodist Church through education, policies and support.
