United Methodist churches are encouraged to set aside a Sunday — typically in the month of May — to celebrate the experiences, gifts, talents and contributions of older adults within their congregation and across the United Methodist connection.

With age often comes wisdom, vitality, empathy and resourcefulness. Older Adult Recognition Day celebrates the ways older adults enrich the life and ministry of the church. The celebration should also provide information to congregations on the issues and concerns related to aging.

Some congregations may choose to celebrate Older Adult Recognition Day in September to coincide with Grandparents' Day. Whenever a church chooses to recognize its older adults, Discipleship Ministries has worship suggestions and resources available to help plan out their service as well as other helpful resources for older adult ministries.
