Support legislation to lift the U.S. embargo on Cuba and prevent U.S. military action.
The U.S. embargo on Cuba has created more than six decades of unnecessary suffering for the Cuban people.
Recently, the U.S. has threatened military action and strengthened sanctions, worsening the humanitarian crisis even further. Across the island, health care, electricity, water, and food distribution are being pushed toward collapse.
The United States’ “maximum pressure” campaign has led to fuel shortages and tightened banking, trade, and travel restrictions, further disrupting the flow of food, medicine, and other necessities.
United Methodists join the global faith community in standing with the oppressed and advocating for justice, peace, and self-determination in Cuba and beyond.
“The economic embargo has for over fifty-five years created unnecessary suffering and many hardships on the people of Cuba while preventing U.S. citizens from traveling freely to Cuba in the exercise of their constitutional rights and curtailing the ability of churches to provide missional support freely to its sisters and brothers on the island” (2020/2024 Book of Resolutions, #4105, Lift the U.S. Embargo of Cuba).
We have the opportunity to call on Congress to take action.
- The U.S.-Cuba Trade Act (H.R. 7521/S. 136), introduced by Rep. Jim McGovern and Sen. Ron Wyden, would begin to lift the U.S. embargo and open the door to normal relations between the United States and Cuba.
- Cuba War Powers Resolutions (H.J.Res.153/S.J.Res.193), introduced by Rep. Nydia Velázquez and Sen. Tim Kaine, would prevent U.S. military action against Cuba that Congress has not authorized.
