FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 2, 2024
Madison, N.J. – United Methodist Bishop Karen P. Oliveto, in partnership with Dr. Ashley Boggan, the General Commission on Archives and History’s general secretary, has extended a call for applications for individuals interested in serving on the inaugural board of the Center for LGBTQ+ United Methodist Heritage.
“At this historic time in the life of The United Methodist Church, we are eager to begin the intentional and important work of collecting and preserving stories, as well as educating others and conducting research surrounding Queer Methodist history,” says Oliveto, who is set to retire Sept. 1 and will serve as the board chairperson of the new center. “We know we can’t do the work alone and we invite others within the denomination who have a passion for our mission to consider joining us as board members.”
Applications should be submitted by email to gcah@gcah.org no later than Aug. 31,2024. Applications may be mailed to the attention of Dr. Ashley Boggan, GCAH, 36 Madison Ave., P.O. Box 127, Madison, N.J. 07940. In order to meet the Aug. 31 deadline, applications must be postmarked by Aug. 20, 2024.
Formation for the center was announced during the Postponed 2020 General Conference, held April 23 to May 3, 2024, in Charlotte, N.C., following the historic vote that removed the funding ban that previously prevented general agencies of The UMC from being financial invested in LGBTQ+ ministries. The center is set to launch in October 2024.
