The vision of The United Methodist Church is clear and compelling: to form disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections. This vision is not simply words on paper—it is a living call that the church carries into the world each day. Nowhere is this more beautifully seen than in the work of the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM), the worldwide mission agency of our church.
Global Ministries reminds us that bold love has no borders. Every day, missionaries and mission partners step into places where hope is fragile, resources are scarce, or communities are struggling. They go not to bring charity, but to embody Christ’s love that crosses boundaries of culture, language, and geography. Bold love is the nurse in a rural clinic offering care with compassion, the young adult missionary who chooses to live alongside marginalized neighbors, and the congregation that links arms with a sister church across the ocean. This is love that dares to trust the Holy Spirit and proclaim that every person is precious in God’s sight.
The work of Global Ministries also radiates joyful service. At its heart, mission is not a burden but a gift, an opportunity to participate in what God is already doing in the world. Through programs like the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), communities devastated by natural disasters find relief and hope. Through schools, health clinics, and sustainable farming projects, families discover opportunities for growth and renewal. And through the Global Mission Fellows program, young disciples serve with energy and joy, discovering that when we give ourselves to others, we receive joy in return. This joy comes from knowing that serving in Christ’s name changes not only the world around us but also our own hearts.
Just as importantly, Global Ministries raises up leaders who lead with courage. The challenges facing our world are vast—poverty, migration, racism, climate change, and violence. Yet, in the face of these challenges, courageous disciples step forward. They advocate for justice, speak truth in love, and walk alongside communities in times of trial. Their courage is not born from their own strength but from the Spirit who equips them to face difficulties with faith. Courageous leadership says, “Yes, Lord, send me,” even when the road ahead is uncertain.
By connecting the church in mission, Global Ministries reminds us that discipleship is never lived alone. The worldwide connections of The United Methodist Church weave together a rich and diverse family of believers. When a congregation in the United States partners with a church in Africa, or when resources flow from one community to another in times of need, we see the body of Christ at work. These connections remind us that we are one people, united by one Lord, one faith, and one baptism.
In all these ways—through bold love, joyful service, courageous leadership, and worldwide connection—the General Board of Global Ministries helps the church live into its vision. It reminds us that being a disciple of Jesus Christ is a call to action, a call to go into the world with open hearts, willing hands, and Spirit-filled courage. And as we do, the world is transformed, one act of love at a time.
