NEW VIDEO SERIES EXPLORES METHODISM AND THE BIRTH OF A NATION FOR AMERICA’S 250TH
GCAH and New York Conference partner on free resource for churches and individuals

Madison, N.J. – On July 4, 2026, the United States of America celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that marks the beginning of the nation. A new video series, titled "From Crown to Conferencing: Methodism and the New Republic," reflects on the roles Methodists have played leading up to and after the Declaration of Independence was signed.
The resource, produced in partnership between the General Commission on Archives and History (GCAH) and the New York Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, is designed for use by Sunday School classes, small groups, youth groups or individual study. The curriculum is available at no cost.
“Throughout history, Methodism has both shaped and been shaped by the cultures and events around it. In America, the Methodist movement took root alongside a growing spirit of independence in the Colonies,” reflects Dr. Ashley Boggan, GCAH general secretary. “As the United States marks its Semiquincentennial, this video curriculum explores the deep connections between Methodism and the birth of a new nation — and invites us to consider how the church can continue to be a faithful witness for the future.”
“The beginnings of American Methodism and The United States of America are connected in a myriad of ways that lead to where we are now,” adds the Rev. Dr. Rob Lee, connectional coordinator for GCAH, who also developed the scripts and accompanying curriculum. “It was meaningful for us to showcase the first acts of public theology in our denomination and our nation as we seek God’s guidance in this present moment.”
In the new series, Dr. Ashley Boggan and the Rev. Dr. Rob Lee present the information, which is interspersed with historical images and video footage. The videos also feature interviews with pastors from two of the most historic churches in America, John Street United Methodist Church and Historic St. George’s United Methodist Church. Filmed on location in Manhattan and Philadelphia, respectively, viewers get an inside look at the churches and their museums, as well as hearing from the churches’ pastors, the Rev. Stefanie Bennett from John Street UMC and the Rev. Dr. Bill Wilson from Historic St. George’s UMC.
In addition to viewing the videos on ResourceUMC.org, you may also view the videos on GCAH's YouTube channel and at the UM History Hub. Discussion guides to be used for personal reflection or groups are also available with the respective videos.
“From Crown to Conferencing” is the latest in a series of resources produced by GCAH. You may view other resources, including “Rooted Methodism,” “Women Called and Ordained,” “Sand Creek Massacre and Methodism” and “Radicle Methodism” at UM History Hub.
