Choosing displays and technology for churches in 2024

Visual media in churches involves four components:

•      The display ― TV, Projector or LED wall/panels.

•      The media player ― Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick or computer.

•      The media ― Photos, graphics, videos.

•      The person ― Orchestrator and implementer of these components in your context.

Today, we’re primarily focused on the first two components. In the fast-paced, ever-changing landscape of technology, you will want to select the right audio-visual equipment for your church to have the best engagement and impact experience for your congregation. 

Let’s explore some of the most versatile video-tech equipment for churches in 2024, focusing on displays such as TVs, projectors and LED walls.

The rolling TV rig

This is the most versatile and the one thing every church should be using.

When it comes to TVs, don’t overthink it! Televisions needn’t be the latest tech. Go for a 50- to 70-inch TV without breaking the bank.

Since volunteers will likely use them, don’t spend the kind of money that will cause problems if a student accidentally breaks it while playing gaga ball. Remember to always value people over stuff. 

Rolling TV stand

Now level up mobility with a rolling TV stand that allows you to stretch creatively. Don’t mount TVs in rooms that are used only for the occasional business meeting. Instead, have the flexibility to roll the TV onto the stage for sermons one week and into the lobby for announcements the next. 

Use it for Super Bowl parties or YouTube karaoke nights. Portability benefits small-worship environments, simplifying stage design changes and lyrics display.

Media player, cables and adapters

I have completely bought into the Apple ecosystem and suggest grabbing an Apple TV or the equivalent. Permanently install it on your rolling TV rig for convenience. 

Download apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Apple Music or Spotify. Remember to include a dedicated extension cord and power strip for flexible placement within the room. 

Keep a lightweight 10-foot HDMI cable handy to provide an alternative connection option if the WiFi or Apple TV gives you problems. Velcro all remotes to the rig, otherwise they will be lost forever. Other non-Apple options are the Amazon Fire TV Stick, Roku, etc.

Projectors

Projectors and projection screens have served well in specific environments, but they may feel outdated compared with newer options. If you are replacing an existing projector, that makes sense. Just go for a newer model with similar specifications. Otherwise, stick with large TVs or move to LED panels for a more contemporary display.

One great use for a projector is for hosting occasional indoor/outdoor movie nights. These events can provide a lot of family fun and serve as an outreach opportunity in your community. LED panels and walls

For large-format displays, LED panels and walls are not as out of reach as you might expect. While you can’t buy them at a wholesale club, the rapidly advancing technology makes prices more affordable. 

You do not have to cover your entire stage with LED panels. Go with the right size screens for your installation, and if any sections malfunction, replace them more affordably than with traditional projector bulbs. 

With LED panel solutions, you can often rent a set-up for an event as a “test drive” before you make your decision.

Remember, the displays are only as good as the images you showcase. Be prepared to create or purchase graphics and empower staff or volunteers to flex their creativity.
