Creating change together

Nine local churches in Columbus, Ohio, hosted fourteen projects with a poverty theme, including creating a community garden on May 1, 2010. Advocacy and learning workshops coupled with service projects on Poverty & Global Health, Poverty & Neighborhoods, Poverty & Africa, Poverty & Environment led off the first ever Love First Walk to support children in Poverty, ending with a rally on the Statehouse Lawn at Capitol Square. Christians are called "to seek justice and love kindness and walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). Seeking justice means acting as a witness for peace, comfort and healing to "the ends of the earth, but also to the depths of our common life and work" (Social Principles, Preamble).

United Methodists create change together is through civic engagement on behalf of those Jesus lifted up in the Sermon on the Mount. At the local, regional, national and international level United Methodists act on behalf of the poor, the oppressed, the hurt, the exploited, the misunderstood and the forgotten by calling on civic and community leaders to enact compassionate and just laws and policies.

Some churches may be wary of addressing political issues because they do not want to jeopardize their tax exempt status. Church and Society has developed a toolkit called "Creating Change Together" to help church leaders live out their calling to create a more just society while still adhering to the policies of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
