General Conference media credential application opens for Charlotte event

Nashville, Tennessee -  Applications for media credentials for the postponed 2020 General Conference of The United Methodist Church are now being accepted. The event will be held April 23-May 3, 2024, at Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Media and communicators who cannot travel to Charlotte to cover the event on-site will find that many of the special addresses, celebrations and other plenary sessions will be available via live video streaming at umcgc.org/live.

Every four years, the top legislative body of The United Methodist Church convenes for a 10-day meeting to revise church law, as well as to adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. The body also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs for the next four years. The General Conference was originally set to happen in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2020, until the pandemic and resulting visa issues made it necessary to postpone the quadrennial legislative event until 2024.

862 voting delegates have been elected to the denomination’s top policy-making body. The delegates reflect the diversity of The United Methodist Church with attendees from the U.S., Africa, Europe, Asia and concordat churches from The Methodist Church of Great Britain, The Methodist Church of Mexico, The Methodist Church of Puerto Rico and The Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas. Overall attendance is anticipated to be around 5,000 people.

Plenary sessions and legislative committee meetings of the General Conference are open both to the public and to the news media. News media are required to be credentialed in order to gain access to the newsroom, media seating and press conferences and news briefings involving delegates and church leaders.

Members of the news media can apply for media credentials online.

Visit the General Conference website for news, updates, high-resolution images and other information.
