Artificial Intelligence (AI) might sound like something out of science fiction. Still, it's becoming an increasingly practical tool for churches of all sizes. From administrative support to creative outreach, AI offers local congregations new ways to enhance ministry, connect with members and serve the community more effectively. We often get asked the question: “How can it help my church?” We have some use cases for you below.
1. Streamlining communication
One of the most accessible uses of AI is in communication. AI tools can help create email newsletters, social media posts and announcements more efficiently. Platforms like ChatGPT can generate drafts for church bulletins, event reminders or sermon summaries. These tools don’t replace human input but are a starting point to save time and spark ideas.
Reminder: The more prompts and information you give the AI platform of your choice, the more you can tailor it to your needs.
Prompt example: In a friendly tone, write a paragraph for people in my local community inviting them to a church picnic on July 4th. This invite should be inclusive to everyone, but particularly inviting to those who have never been to the church. Let them know we will have lunch, water games for kids and free summer goodie bags for all who attend. The time of the picnic is 12pm-2pm EST. The dress is casual. The address is 1234 Elm Hill Rd. This information will be used on a mailer in my local area. For the backside of the mailer create a fun summer graphic and include scripture from the NRSV. These will go on a 4x6 postcard.
2. Enhancing worship preparation
Preparing sermons and worship materials can be time-intensive. AI can assist by suggesting outlines, offering relevant scripture references or even generating discussion questions for small groups. With discernment and careful review, these tools can help pastors and lay leaders craft resonating messages.
Reminder: If using ChatGPT, you can create a GPT “profile” in which you upload relevant information to help with items such as this one. For example, the Book of Discipline, your bible translation of choice, sermon series information and various other factors. The more information you “feed” it, the better the resources you ask for will match your needs.
3. Supporting administration
AI can help manage schedules, generate reports and analyze data. Whether tracking attendance, reviewing giving trends or organizing volunteer shifts, AI-enabled tools can reduce the administrative burden on church staff and volunteers, freeing them to focus more on relational ministry.
4. Expanding community engagement
AI-powered chatbots or auto-responders on your church website or Facebook page can answer common questions about service times, events or directions. The responders help ensure every visitor or seeker receives timely, accurate information during and outside office hours.
5. Empowering education and discipleship
AI can personalize learning experiences for Bible studies, new member classes or youth programs. Tools that adapt content based on the needs and preferences of users can make faith formation more engaging and relevant.
You can also use AI to generate supplemental documents, worksheets and other items.
Use with care and prayer
While AI can be a helpful resource, it's essential to approach it thoughtfully. It should never replace human connection, pastoral discernment or spiritual wisdom. Instead, think of AI as a supportive partner in ministry—one that, when used wisely, can enhance your church’s mission without compromising its heart.
