"2024 was an exciting and transformative year for United Methodist
Communications. Our team of professionals played an integral role in supporting General
Conference, offered stories of inspiration and clarity amid an environment of misinformation,
and resourced leaders with access to ministry support across the denomination. We did all this
while strategizing to meet the evolving needs of The United Methodist Church and to ensure a

United Methodist Communications
at General Conference
United Methodist Communications played an integral role in the success of the 2020/2024 General Conference of The United Methodist Church. Staff across the agency contributed to meet the myriad of communications needs for the event and its participants in multiple formats and delivery methods.

The Creative Strategy Team created an interactive, denominational booth experience for General Conference attendees that incorporated the 13 UMC agencies and boards from across the UM Connection. As visitors moved through the collaborative display, they'd encountered the #BeUMC message and celebrated the unity of United Methodist core values as lived out in congregations around the globe and discovered information about The UMC worldwide through interesting facts, videos and an interactive globe. Informational walls helped attendees learn more about the general agencies, the Connectional Table and the Council of Bishops. The booth also served as a place for agencies to hold meetings to talk about their work, for reporters to capture eye-catching images telling the story of the Church and for group photo and video backdrops.
UMCom handled General Conference logo/branding, the official, multi-language worship guide and welcome advertising in forms like lamppost banners and convention center signage. The team also created booth designs for Africa University and GCAH and marketing materials support for GCSRW.
The Marketing & Advertising Team ran sponsored paid promotions via social media, search engine and YouTube. Overall efforts garnered 4.8 million impressions.

The UMCom Production Team handled livestream prep, event and post production needs, including overseeing video prep for various UMCom and other agency videos, managing the live production from the plenary floor, capturing the streaming, editing and posting videos in the newsroom, booking and managing production of videos and crews in the newsroom and coordinating video file sharing with a number of conference and agency communicators.
The livestream of General Conference provided by UMCom was made available on the ResorceUMC.org landing page in five languages and ASL. The livestream received 450,000 views in 2024, including nearly 6,500 of the French translation, 3,000 of the Spanish language version and 1,901 of the Korean language version.
UMCom supported the overall technical needs of the event. The agency hosted a newsroom and press conference space where communicators and press could concentrate on sharing the news of The UMC. The information technology staff ensured that physical space, connection and electronic needs were met and assisted/advised the Commission on the General Conference volunteer tech team on additional activities, including event registration. CMS performance was also improved to ensure 100% stability of the denominational websites during the event.

Teams across the agency collaborated to present an online orientation and briefing hosted by UM News—available via livestream and recordings—to inform and equip delegates in advance of General Conference.
UM News produced more than 80 English-language stories surrounding General Conference, including a daily wrap-up story. 15 additional pieces of original content were provided in Korean and Spanish and more than 150 stories were translated into French, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Kiswahili. UM News experienced 1.2 million total page views for all language content through the run of the conference. Their story on lifting the 40-year ban on gay clergy received 108,000 views.
941 photographs were carefully edited and captioned to relay the happenings of the event through images. In all, UM News’ Flickr photo site received more than 2 million views.
The Ask The UMC team saw a 75% increase in live chat volume as it responded to questions from online viewers, journalists and annual conference and general agency staff throughout the 10 days.

UMCom's Public Information Team worked tirelessly to ensure that people were aware of the narrative of The UMC and the story of the happenings surrounding the 2020/2024 General Conference.
Overall, the efforts resulted in 50+ features garnering 245 million+ potential unique impressions of media coverage.
The success was due in part to a publicity plan that was developed and executed, including action points such as talking points and resources, informational meetings, 8 training sessions with annual conference communicators, and topical spokesperson identification and training. The team managed 175 communicator requests for on-site involvement and assisted reporters in providing remote coverage via interviews and provision of a resource rich and frequently updated online press kit. The team also handled official messaging requests from the Commission on the General Conference staff.

The Denominational Content Team’s biggest project of the year was UMCGC.org—the 2020/2024 General Conference website—a crucial tool before, during and after the Charlotte event. It provided real-time updates, essential resources, media coverage and insightful stories on key legislation. UMCom delivered daily highlight videos, in-depth explanations of passed legislation and guidance on constitutional amendments, ensuring church leaders stayed informed.
Through The Recap—videos that offer a quick glimpse into top stories from across The United Methodist Church’s connection—UMCom delivered worldwide church news, explained the new Social Principles, walked through the process for amending the UM constitution and reflected on the historic decision to remove exclusionary language from the Book of Discipline.
